Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Race (Lake Tahoe, from 2006-09-23 08:00 to 2006-09-23 14:00) — by babe baarbd
Defined by both the incredible beauty of Lake Tahoe and the towering peaks of the High Sierra, Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s most famous sporting playgrounds. The region has an almost endless variety of spectacular mountain biking trails, adventurous hikes and, of course, waterborne activities on the “Big Blue” - Lake Tahoe - one of the largest, deepest and purest alpine lakes on earth. The Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Race is a celebration of the natural environment of the North Shore, and the perfect climate of “Indian Summer.” September is a favorite month of Tahoe locals... and no wonder: day-time temperatures are in the 80’s with the evenings cooling into the 60’s, the skies are deep blue with only an occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling through (to help keep the dust down on the trails!) and, best of all, the bustle of the summer tourist season is a distant speck in the rear-view mirror. This is a perfect time for a visit to the Big Blue.

BAOC - Nav (Bay Front Park - Menlo Park, from 2006-07-30 08:00 to 2006-07-30 12:00) — by babe baarbd
BAOC returns to cozy Bayfront Park in Menlo Park on Sunday, July 30. Mostly open, with modest hills and numerous trails, Bayfront is a great place for beginners, while still providing an adventure for the experienced orienteer.
BAOC - Nav (Oakland, from 2006-08-04 08:00 to 2006-08-04 12:00) — by babe baarbd
The "Maze-O" is simply a Score-O with more route planning than usual: Sausal Canyon is a dramatic drop between two large mountain spurs along Park Blvd. Leimert is the only street that crosses it, utilizing a tall bridge! Up and down, the canyon is rimmed with trails. A year-round creek flows in the bottom, and just this week I was able to run along the creek without getting wet, using it as a trail — although in some parts I had to hopscotch over some stepping stones to do it. Vegetation is thick, poison oak is present, but you can do the whole event on trails and avoid it. Some of you may want to go cross-country up and down the canyon if you see the opportunity — just make sure the vegetation and steepness aren't too nasty. Seven controls will be placed. You may go for all 7, or merely 4, and I would expect the winning time for getting all 7 to be about 30 minutes.
BAOC - Nav (Golden Gate Park, from 2006-08-05 09:00 to 2006-08-05 12:00) — by babe baarbd
The meeting location will be the same as the last four years: Marx Meadow along John F. Kennedy Drive between 25th Avenue and 30th Avenue.
BAOC - Nav (Oakland, from 2006-08-05 08:00 to 2006-08-05 12:00) — by babe baarbd
The ~4 km "Urban Goat" will be a fun and wild ride through the winding streets and staircases of Oakland's "Crocker Highlands" neighborhood. And it's mostly downhill from the start! A window Score-O of a couple controls and one allowable skip inside that window should mix people up a bit. Controls will be "Q&A" format.
BAOC - Nav (Joaquin Miller Park, from 2006-07-08 18:39 to 2006-07-08 18:39) — by babe baarbd

BAOC Golden Goat (Briones, from 2007-03-25 11:00 to 2007-03-25 16:00) — by babe baarbd
So, for those who don't know... What is a Golden Goat? ...it's an especially long course with a mass start, intermediate-level control locations, following permitted (i.e., it's expected), rules that are specific to that year's course (more on that later), with a "bail out" Golden Kid course for those who don't want to do the whole Goat course. This is not to say that the Golden Kid is easy...it's just not as long and hard as the full Goat. You do not have to declare which course you are doing beforehand. You can decide while you're running.
